As we head into winter, one of my absolute favorite things to do is transform my home into a cozy, warm space that feels like a hug the moment you walk in. There’s something magical about this time of year—the air turns crisp, the leaves start to change, and suddenly, all I want is to snuggle up inside with a warm drink and soft blankets.

In the summer, I’m all about keeping things light and airy. I love when my home feels spacious and breezy, perfect for those long, sunny days. But as soon as the temperatures start to drop, it’s a different story! I’m ready to trade in that summery feel for a cozy, snuggly place to curl up and feel toasty.
So, today let’s talk about how to make your home cozy for fall and winter. In this blog post, I’m going to share some of my favorite ways to create a super cozy space you’ll never want to leave!
7 Things You Need To Make Your Home Cozy
Here are 7 elements of a cozy home that will have you feeling snug and comfortable all season long!
1. Warmth
Of course, the most essential ingredient for a cozy home is warmth! When it comes to creating a cozy atmosphere, cranking up the central heating is an obvious first step.
And if you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace, even better! There’s nothing quite like the warm glow of a fire to give a room that warm, cozy feel.

There are plenty of other ways to stay toasty though, depending on your budget.
To keep the cold at bay, you could hang a thermal door curtain in your entryway, place draught excluders at the foot of any doors, upgrade your loft insulation, or add insulating tape to your windows.
And to make sure you’re getting the most bang for your buck, you could bleed your radiators to make sure they’re working efficiently and install reflective radiator foil, which will reflect heat back into the room instead of letting it escape through the walls.
But there’s another aspect to warmth that’s just as important: color! As the seasons change, so should your home’s palette.

Fall and winter are the perfect times to bring in rich, warm tones like browns, oranges, olive greens, and even those deep jewel tones.
I personally love to switch out my cooler-toned furnishings for warmer, cozier alternatives at this time of year. It’s a simple switch that makes such a difference in creating a warm, inviting home.
2. Lighting
Another key ingredient to a cozy home is the lighting. Getting your lighting right is the easiest way to create a cozy ambiance.
But here’s the thing: you don’t want too much of it, and definitely not the harsh, blue-toned kind! Instead, aim for warm, gentle, soft lighting that creates a cozy atmosphere without overwhelming your space.
Turning off the main lights and using floor lamps, table lamps, or sconces is a shortcut to creating cozy areas with mood lighting. The bookcase lamps I made out of old piano lamps are perfect for lighting up a cozy little corner to snuggle up and read a book!

There’s no need to completely overhaul your light fixtures, though, because there are lots of different light sources you can use. Adding a few fairy lights, lanterns, or candles is an easy way to get that warm glow as the evenings get darker.
Personally, I love breaking out my Better Homes & Gardens flameless pillar candles and gold lanterns this time of year. They add such a welcoming, cozy feel without any fuss, and they’re perfect for creating little vignettes.
Alternatively, swap your on-off light switches for dimmer switches, you can adjust the lighting to suit your mood. Or you could install smart light bulbs, so you can change how warm or cool the lighting is match the season.

3. Textiles
Another biggie! As the weather cools down, you’ll want to adorn your home with thick, heavy fabrics.
If you already have heavy drapes or thick rugs, great! But if not, don’t worry; you don’t need to spend a fortune on big items to give your living space a cozy atmosphere.

One of my absolute favorite fall decorating elements is throws… lots and lots of throw blankets! I also can’t get enough of blankets and velvet throw pillows, like my Better Homes & Gardens Velvet Plush Blankets. Another great option is sofa covers.
Soft fabrics and cozy textures like furs, velvet, tartan, and all things fluffy are a guaranteed way to add warmth and comfort.
Personally, I’m all about faux lambskins because they are SO COZY! I put those things everywhere when it starts getting cold!

I also love the faux mink fur in my entryway. It’s such a small detail but it instantly makes you feel like you’ve arrived somewhere cozy when you arrive at our house.
For the bedroom, layer your bed with a lightweight comforter and duvet for cooler nights, then throw on a quilt or blanket at the foot of the bed. Oh, and add plenty of cushions, of course!

4. Natural Materials
When I think of coziness, I immediately picture wood fires, pinecones, and Christmas trees. Natural elements like wood and even brick bring in that earthy, grounded vibe that just makes a home feel warm and inviting.
If you’re renovating with coziness in mind, this could mean furnishing your home with traditional, worn furniture like vintage dressers, or laying some beautiful hardwood flooring, like the TrafficMASTER Glenwood Cherry I used for my parents’ house.

But when it comes to seasonal décor, you really don’t need to go big! Just adding in a few smaller elements made of natural materials can have a huge impact.
Think wooden picture frames, coasters, and ornaments, or woven baskets. Adding natural foliage, like houseplants, wreaths, potpourri, pinecones, or garlands is another great idea.
You can go with a seasonal theme by incorporating pinecones, pumpkins, and wreaths into your home decor, or you can just switch out regular decorative elements and storage solutions for ones made from more natural materials, like woven baskets and dried pampas grass for a more subtle effect.

5. Scent
The way your home feels isn’t just about how it looks… don’t forget about the other senses! And during the winter months, scent is such a powerful one. It’s the first thing your guests will notice, and filling your home with delicious smells instantly creates that warm, inviting atmosphere we all crave in the colder months.
Scented candles are an easy go-to (you can even make your own). Go for delicious scents like spiced apple, pumpkin, or pine.
Nothing beats curling up with a good book, a warm apple cider, and seeing the candle light flickering around you. Essential oils are another good idea.

In fall, my girls and I make orange pomanders – cloved oranges that we put inside floral arrangements to fill the house with the smell of spiced citrus.
And of course, nothing beats the smell of something baking in the oven, whether it’s fresh bread, cookies, or any other cozy treat. Yum!
6. Comfort
Now, if you’re going to snuggle up and get cozy, you’ll need somewhere comfortable to sit. If you already have a comfy sofa or armchair, you’re halfway there. Add some cushions and blankets, and you’re good to go.
But why not make things even cozier? Think about adding a footstool, a book stand, or even a handy mug holder so you can snuggle up with a hot cup of cocoa (or tea, or coffee – whatever your cozy drink of choice!). Go all out on comfort!

Don’t forget about those smaller spaces, too. You can easily turn a dark corner or an unused nook, like under the stairs or by a window, into a cozy corner where you can escape with a good book and relax in your own little comfy haven.
7. Passion
OK, this one’s a little less conventional, but hear me out!
A house isn’t truly a home without a bit of love and personality sprinkled throughout. Infusing your family’s passions and personalities into your home is what will really make it feel cozy and unique. So what kinds of personal touches could you add to your home this winter?
Well, everyone knows that a library is the ultimate cozy room. There’s nothing quite like curling up in a cozy chair with a good book, surrounded by shelves of your favorite reads.

But if you’re looking for a budget-friendly alternative, you could create a small vignette by stacking up some thrifted books. It’s a great way to add character without breaking the bank.
For the music lovers, why not bring that passion into your decor? A well-placed guitar or another instrument can add so much charm to a room.
And, of course, nothing says “home” like family photos and keepsakes. They’re the perfect way to infuse love and warmth into every corner of your space.

Now you know how to make your home cozy, you don’t need a big home decor budget or a huge overhaul to make your space feel cozy for fall and winter. Just a few thoughtful changes can make all the difference.
