Hear me out… I think fall dining table decor might actually be my favorite kind of table decor. It is the homiest season!

It’s all about snuggling up in your favorite chair with a chunky blanket and the flicker of candlelight all around you. It’s just so deliciously cozy!
And is there anything more homey that sitting down for a delicious meal with your family? I don’t think so! So fall + food + decorating = a big yes from me!
So today, I’m sharing all the key elements I think every fall dining table needs, along with some tips and recommendations. Get yourself these items and you’ll soon have a fall table that’s cozy, stylish, and that looks good enough to eat!
Everything You’ll Need For Your Fall Table Set Up
Before we jump in, I want to say that, while I do love decorating my home for fall, I don’t love spending money on seasonal items. So I’m not going to tell you to go out and buy a full set of fall tableware you’ll only use once a year.
Decorating a table for fall shouldn’t cost much. Ideally, the majority of your fall table set up will consist of items you already own, or items that you can use during the rest of the year as well.

Not that you shouldn’t treat yourself to a few season-specific items! I will certainly be sharing some of my favorite fall tableware products for you to consider. But in general, keep the fall-specific items to a minimum, to get the most bang for your buck.
1. A Tablecloth Or A Table Runner
When you’re planning your fall dining table decor, one of the first items to decide on is your tablecloth. It’s the canvas for your entire fall table set up, so make sure it contrasts well with everything that will sit on top of it, not just in terms of color, but also texture, pattern, and material.
You can’t go wrong with a beautiful linen or a classic patterned tablecloth for fall. Or, if you have a gorgeous wooden dining room table, you could be brave and skip the tablecloth altogether!
But if you’re on a budget or just love a good DIY hack, why not get creative? Personally, I love using a simple $3 roll of gift wrap as a tablecloth for fall gatherings. It’s affordable, disposable (so cleanup is a breeze), and you can switch it up every year.
My go-to is brown kraft paper with shiny gold polka dots. The rough texture feels perfect for the fall season, and those golden accents look amazing next to candles and gold fall tableware.
You could also experiment with wallpaper remnants, fabric offcuts, or even old scarves or curtains. Your imagination is the only limitation!

Whichever option you choose, adding a table runner in a rustic, textured material like burlap or cheesecloth will give your fall table instant cozy vibes. Just remember to pick something that contrasts with your table or tablecloth.
2. Placemats & Coasters
No fall dinner table is complete without placemats and coasters, and round woven placemats are the obvious choice for fall season. They bring in beautiful natural textures and a neutral brown tone. Plus, the circular shape adds a nice contrast if you’ve got a rectangular dining table.

Fabric placemats are another good option. Even simple offcuts of fabric can work beautifully for fall gatherings. You don’t need to worry about everything been neat and perfect because fall’s all about rustic charm. Just make sure to place a heatproof layer underneath to protect your table from hot dishes.
Wooden coasters are another obvious choice for this season, but you could also consider other natural materials like slate, wicker, marble, leather, or stone. Remember, your coasters don’t need to match your placemats to look good. Variety creates visual interest!
3. Cutlery
Cutlery might seem like a small detail, but it can make such a big difference to the look of your fall table setting. That said, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with using your everyday set. Oftentimes, simplest is best!
But if you love hosting dinner parties or want to add a little extra sparkle for a special occasion like Thanksgiving, this could be the perfect time to treat yourself to a special set.
Personally, I can’t resist gold accents, so my fall cutlery is gold-toned. It adds a hint of elegance and a touch of glamor while contrasting perfectly with all the natural textures and neutral tones that define the season.

Whether you choose gold, matte black, or even copper, stylish cutlery is one of the easiest ways to elevate your fall table set up and make your dining table feel extra special this fall.
4. Crockery & Dinnerware
A fall table setting can include lots of different pieces of crockery, depending on the meal and the occasion. Let’s start with the essentials: dinner plates, side plates, and bowls.
Personally, I’d say that your everyday crockery works perfectly fine for these. You don’t want every element competing for attention.
I usually stick with simple white plates layered on gold-colored charger plates. This setup brings a touch of elegance without me having to buy a whole new set just for fall.

You can also mix things up by swapping out one element, like the side plates, for a different color or pattern to bring in a bit of variety and visual interest.
When it comes to things like gravy boats, jugs, and cloches, keeping it simple might be best, but if you find a standout piece that you love, like a unique jug or serving dish, go ahead and make it part of your fall tableware.
5. Drinkware
Drinkware is another simple way to add personality to your fall dining table decor. Again, your everyday drinkware will work perfectly well, but fall is the perfect season to have a little fun and mix things up.
Imagine serving drinks in gorgeous metallic goblets. Or using fancy green or brown crystal-look glasses. Or adding a touch of elegance with some brass or gold-effect tumblers?
And if the rest of your crockery has a cream or white ceramic texture, this kind of drinkware will really pop and make your fall table look absolutely stunning!

6. Napkins & Napkin Rings
Now we’re getting into the more decorative touches of your fall dining table decor. This is the really fun part where you can show your personality and include more seasonal items without feeling guilty about not using what you already have.
Linen napkins are a perfect choice for a sophisticated fall table. And rich autumnal shades like terracotta, burnt orange, deep red, or even jewel tones look stunning against neutral tableware. If your tablecloth already features those rich colors, go for contrast with cream or soft beige napkins to keep things balanced.
Napkin rings are like jewelry for your dining table. They’re not at all essential, but they definitely make it look pretty!
There are so many shapes and styles available, and this is one area where you can be a bit more intricate or fancy, especially if the rest of your fall table set up is simple and understated.

The most important thing here is contrast. For example, if you’ve gone with dark blue or emerald napkins, try using gold or brass napkin rings (my personal favorite!).
And don’t worry because pretty doesn’t have to mean pricey. Seriously… you can make your own fall-themed napkin rings out of wire for just a few dollars, like I did once. Or, if you prefer a more rustic look for your fall dining table decor, tie your napkins with parcel string, twine, or ribbon.
That’s one of the best things about decorating a table for fall; it’s a season where rough-and-ready looks just as charming as perfectly polished!
7. Candles & Candlestick Holders
Candles have got to be one of the most essential parts of fall dining table decor, right?! They’re the ultimate decorative accessory, and they instantly give you that warm, cozy feeling. A few well-placed candles can transform an ordinary dining table into something truly magical.

If you have little ones around and you’re concerned about open flames, there’s no need to miss out. These days, there are so many beautiful artificial and battery-powered candles available. Some even flicker like real flames, giving you all the cozy vibes without the worry.
If you do go for real candles, consider choosing scented ones to add another layer of fall ambiance. Think cinnamon, pumpkin spice, sandalwood, or apple cider. These scents will make your home feel extra inviting for any fall gatherings and dinner parties. Mmm!
Candles are also great because they come in so many different forms – glass jars, tall candlesticks, simple tealights, and so on. That makes them really versatile.
And don’t overlook candlestick holders themselves. They’re beautiful accessories in their own right!
If you’ve gone with a more rustic, neutral look for your fall table set up so far, you can afford to go a bit more intricate and fancy here. Crystal or glass holders, for example, would catch the candlelight and contrast nicely with the rougher textures you’ve used elsewhere.

And of course, you don’t need to spend a fortune to create that stunning glow. There are plenty of ways to get creative and even make your own candle holders, like I did!
8. Foliage & Vases
No fall dining table decor is complete without a touch of nature. I think most people associate fall with leaves, so bringing a bit of that gorgeous fall foliage indoors is one of the easiest ways to capture the cozy atmosphere of the fall season.
You have a few lovely options for adding greenery and texture to your fall table setting:
1. Fresh flowers
Choose flowers like chrysanthemums, sunflowers, and dahlias in warm, autumnal tones. Display them in a vase or jug, perhaps with a nice ribbon tied around it. Maybe go for glass or ceramic for a classic look, or something more rustic like a repurposed jar or pitcher for a relaxed fall vibe.
2. Artificial plants
Faux flowers and greenery are amazing if you prefer to keep your decor low maintenance or if you want to reuse your fall tableware setup year after year.
You can find faux greenery in every style imaginable, from realistic autumn leaves to full garlands that you can drape along your dinner table. Go for faux maple leaves, eucalyptus, hydrangeas, wheat stalks, or even dried pampas grass to build layers of natural textures and rich color.

3. Foraged foliage
Head outside to your yard or take a walk in nature to collect a few fall leaves or sprigs of greenery to use as part of your fall table set up. Just give your finds a quick clean and let them dry before arranging them on your dining room table.
This option is simple, free, and wonderfully authentic. It’s the perfect way to celebrate fall!
9. A Centerpiece
Every beautiful table needs a focal point, and that’s where the centerpiece comes in. It ties all the other elements together and draws the eye to the center of your table.
And there are so many different options! Here are a few creative ideas for your fall centerpiece:
- A simple vase filled with seasonal flowers
- A wreath with candles nestled in the middle
- A vignette of fall decor displayed in a wire or woven basket, or on a tray or cake stand
- A DIY reusable foam pumpkin
- A decorative lantern, perhaps filled with seasonal decorative items
- A large candle display

Whatever you choose for the center of the table, try placing it on a riser or cake stand to elevate it and make it the true focus of your fall dining table decor.
10. Decorative Elements
Now for the really fun bit! Once you’ve got all your essentials in place, it’s time to play around with the finishing touches. These little extras are what give your fall dining table decor its personality and cozy vibes. Just make sure not to overcrowd the table. A few carefully placed accents will be plenty!
You can sprinkle small pieces across your table, create mini vignettes, or style a few details around your napkins or centerpiece. Think of it as adding layers of charm to your fall table.
Ideally, your fall dining table decor will consist of at least a few natural elements like pine cones, leaves, corn husks, acorns, wood slices, potpourri, twigs, dried orange slices, faux berries, and so on. (And yes, faux items are fine!)

One of my favorite ways to spruce up basic items is by spray painting them. This way, I don’t have to spend much on the original items, I get to add my own personality, I can use colors that match the rest of my home, and my decor ends up looking less “off the shelf!”
Other simple fall decor ideas include beads, ribbons, baubles, trays, and pedestal bowls. I especially love filling lanterns, jars, or glass vases with beads, baubles, and pine cones. This is actually one of my favorite fall table decor ideas because it’s just such an exquisite blend of rustic fall charm and sophistication!

Decorating a dining room table for fall really doesn’t need to be expensive. You probably already own most of the items you’ll need for your place settings. Then it’s just a case of adding a few decorative items with seasonal charm, like foliage from your garden.
