People often ask me what DIY or decorating project I’m working on. And while I do love a good, dramatic before-and-after, there are so many easy ways to update your home that, most of the time, I’m just making one tiny update at a time.
One small project here, one simple fix there. I call it “room tweaking!”
Frankly, most of us don’t have the time, budget, or energy to take on massive renovation projects. And that’s completely fine! There are so many simple home improvements you can make in a couple of hours without a lot of mess, tools, or DIY experience.
And so I’ve rounded up a whole bunch of cheap weekend projects that can make a huge difference to the feel of a room.
I’m talking simple ways to elevate the look of your living space without doing any major renovations, making a mess, or building anything from scratch. You won’t need to open a tin of paint or wrangle any power tools to make these small changes.

I’ve grouped these quick updates into two categories: house-wide upgrades and easy ways to spruce up your kitchen and bathroom. (If you’re looking for outdoor updates, see my post of backyard ideas on a budget.)
Okay, let’s dive into my list of sixteen easy ways to update your home in just a few hours!
House-Wide Updates That Make a Big Difference
Let’s start with some easy home updates you can make to almost any room in your house – the entryway, hallway, living room, dining room, or the bedrooms.
1. Update the Window Dressings
Swapping out basic plastic or metal curtain rods for more stylish versions—such as those with matte black, brass, or wood finishes—can instantly elevate the look of a room.
You can also add new curtain rings, tie-backs, or even new curtains, if your budget allows.
You’ll probably need a couple of hours to find the right products and measure your windows, but the installation itself should take under an hour.

2. Get New Door Handles or Knobs
Swapping out boring, builder-grade door hardware is a great way to give your home a more deliberate and polished feel.
You’ll usually want to keep the same handle style for all your interior doors for a cohesive look, but you can mix things up between floors if you want to!
Again, you’ll need some time for shopping (see my round-up of the best designer door knobs here!), and then installation will take around 10-30 minutes per door. It’s a simple change that will instantly give your home a more current look.

3. Swap Switch Plates
Changing out plain plastic switch plates for something a little more unique is one of the easiest home updates you can make! You can go simple with a sleek metal plate or add charm with decorative frames—there are tons of weird and wonderful options on Etsy and Amazon!
For a cohesive look, match your switch plates to your door handles and any other hardware.
Again, this is a cheap house project that will take just a few minutes per switch, plus shopping time, and instantly improve the look of your home.

4. Replace, Upgrade, or Add Light Fixtures
Lighting has a huge impact on the feel of a room. In general, the more lamps and lighting you have, the better!
If your budget allows, swap out old overhead lights for something more modern or eye-catching. Alternatively, consider making some easy upgrades to your existing setup—here are some clever ways to update old fixtures.
Now for one of my favorite home decor updates… Install battery-powered wall sconces! These beauties look so polished and sophisticated, but installing them is as easy as hanging a picture frame!

5. Hang a Piece of Art or Other Decorative Items
Talking of picture frames, one of the simplest ways to update your home decor is by displaying art. Whether it’s a new painting, a vintage print, or something personal like family photos, a well-placed piece of art can instantly change the vibe of a room.
And it doesn’t have to be art per se—mirrors, wall baskets, or even decorative hooks can make beautiful focal points. Here are some other wall decoration ideas to consider.
You can also swap out any picture frames for new ones, or add artwork to some unexpected places!

6. Style a Simple Vignette
A vignette is just a small, styled arrangement of decor items—and it’s one of the easiest ways to give any surface a more thoughtful, curated look.
Try grouping a few items like a stack of books, a candle, a small plant, and a framed photo or ornament on a coffee table, shelf, or countertop. It only takes a few minutes to pull together, but it can completely change the feel of a space.

7. Add Some Decorative Textiles
Adding a throw blanket, accent rug, or a few pretty throw pillows is one of the easiest ways to update your home without breaking a sweat! You could also swap in a fresh tablecloth, some placemats, or stylish coasters.
These small upgrades can introduce color, texture, or pattern to a space—giving it a completely new look with almost no effort. One of the best ways to showcase your personal style!

8. Get Some Houseplants
Plants breathe new life into any space—literally and visually. Whether you choose a real plant or a convincing faux one, adding greenery is a simple way to make a room feel more inviting and fresh.
And they don’t need to cost a lot. Check out these tips for getting cheap or free plants and my list of household objects or thrifted items you can use as planters.

9. Replace the Shower Curtain and Rod
If your bathroom still has a basic plastic shower rod or a tired old curtain, you’ve got yourself a super easy project with a big payoff! Swapping in more decorative rod and a nice new curtain will instantly transform the look of your bathroom. It couldn’t be easier!

10. Add Some Peel-and-Stick Tiles
Using adhesive tiles in your kitchen or bathroom has to be one of the easiest ways to update your home! There are so many gorgeous designs these days, and it’s as simple as ordering your chosen tiles, cutting them to size, and sticking them down.
You can use them to refresh a backsplash, line the back of some open shelving, or even update a tired floor. They’re renter-friendly, budget-friendly, and surprisingly easy to install. An easy DIY project anyone can do!

11. Refresh the Grout
Dingy grout can make even the cleanest bathroom or kitchen look tired. Thankfully, there’s an easy fix. All you need is a grout pen to go over the grout. It’s kind of like coloring in!
Use white to freshen up your existing grout, or go bold with a different color for a more modern look!

12. Replace the Faucet
Swapping out old faucets is another straightforward upgrade that can really modernize your home. Faucets come in all kinds of finishes and styles, and many are designed for easy DIY installation. Again, just make sure to match it to any other hardware if you can.
A simple home improvement that will make the room feel more high-end with just an hour or so of work!

13. Update Cabinet Pulls and Knobs
Changing your cabinet hardware is one of the easiest ways to give your kitchen or bathroom a new look. Whether you go with sleek modern handles, vintage-style knobs, or something fun and unique, new hardware can completely change the feel of a room. And all you need is a screwdriver!

14. Replace the Toilet Seat
It may seem small, but replacing an old toilet seat can make a huge difference in the overall look of your bathroom.
There are plenty of affordable options available, from basic designs to more stylish ones that can add a touch of personality to your space. This easy project shouldn’t take more than a few minutes, plus shopping time!

15. Swap Out Towels, Oven Gloves, and Other Textiles
Sometimes, all it takes is replacing worn or mismatched towels, oven gloves, dish cloths, or other home goods to breathe new life into your kitchen or bathroom.
Opt for towels in fresh colors or patterns that complement and enhance your existing decor, or go for a coordinated set for a more polished look.

16. Decant Consumables into Decorative Dispensers
Switching out basic soap bottles for stylish, refillable dispensers is a simple and affordable way to add a touch of elegance to your bathroom or kitchen. There are so many stunning containers and dispensers out there, to match any interior design style.
This small change adds a polished, cohesive look to your space—and it only takes a few minutes to transfer your soap or lotion into a new bottle. It’s an easy way to upgrade your home’s feel in almost no time!
