Confession: I’m obsessed with decorative tassels. They’re such an affordable way to add a touch of elegance to any room. I love them!
I’ve come up with numerous ways to incorporate tassels into home decor accessories, and my house is now full of them. My kids think I’m nuts!
But honestly, it’s those small decorative accents that make a house feel like a home. A tassel adds that perfect finishing touch, a little pop of color, and a nice bit of personality.
So yes, I use decorative tassels everywhere I can. And once you start using them as part of your home decor, you’ll soon see why!

Plus Tassels Come in A HUGE Range of Styles!
Seriously, there are so many different kinds to choose from! In addition to regular decorative tassels, there are beaded tassels and bullion tassels. Bullion tassels have those twisted fibers that loop together – the sort often used as a curtain tieback.
Beaded tassels come in a huge range of styles and materials. Such as sandstone beads, quartz beads, peridot beads, and acrylic beads, to name just a few!
Tassels also come in so many different materials, colors, lengths, and trims. Think chainette fringe, pom trims, shell trims, lip cords, and so many more!
Here are some particularly elegant tassels I spotted on Amazon:

Whatever your home decor aesthetic, you should be able to find some decorative tassels to match! Whether that means bohemian tassels with natural trims or colorful tassels with pom trims!
Even better, you can make your own DIY tassels really cheaply! Wrap your chosen material around a piece of cardboard, tie off the top, snip the bottom, and trim to shape. Or get some bead kits and string the beads together.

There aren’t many home decor accessories that you can whip up in a few minutes!
14 Ways to Use Decorative Tassels in Your Home Decor
Without further ado, here are my favorite ways to use decorative tassels as home décor accents.
1. As Jewelry for Door Knobs
First, one of the easiest ways to decorate your home using tassels: hanging them from door knobs! It’s so simple but it instantly makes even the most boring door knobs look special. Tassels are like jewelry for your doors!
Lots of the doorknobs (and other pieces of hardware) in my home are gold, so I like to adorn them with tassels that also have a touch of gold in them, like a gold cap.
This helps to tie everything together, which is especially important when you’re moving from room to room. It’s a simple way to make my home decor feel cohesive, even if each individual room is decorated differently.
Whether you use them on every door or just one, hanging tassels from doorknobs is a quick and budget-friendly way to make your home look a little more high-end.

2. To Upgrade Plain Textiles
Perhaps the most obvious way to use decorative tassels is to spruce up textiles like blankets, bedspreads, rugs, and decorative throw pillows. Whether you’re bored of your existing textiles, or your budget only allows you to buy simple, plain items, attaching colorful tassels is a really affordable way to upgrade your soft furnishings.
If you’re handy with sewing, knitting, or crocheting, attaching tassels is a breeze. If not, you might be able to attach them in a different way – perhaps using clips, safety pins, or other creative attachments depending on how the item will be used.
Here’s a styling tip: if your textile is patterned, choose tassels in one of the accent colors to tie everything together. If it’s plain, you can either match the color for a subtle effect or pick a contrasting color for a playful pop. Or have a browse on Pinterest or Amazon for inspiration.

3. To Add Glamor to Lamps & Lights
Another fun place to hang decorative tassels is from lamps. I love hanging tassels over lampshades. They instantly add a touch of elegance to plain shades and (this is genius!) if there are any seams, stains, or stitching you don’t want anyone to see, you can cover them with the tassel!
You can also hang tassels from other parts of lights and lamps, like the arm if it’s one of those adjustable ones that folds, or the pull cord.
If you have wall sconces, you could try hanging decorative tassels from them in various lengths and colors. Large decorative tassels can look gorgeous hanging from chandeliers too. Just make sure they’re not too long!
When it comes to lamps and light fixtures, I like to use fancy tassels with metallic threads, gold accents, and beads or glass details. This way, the light bounces off them beautifully, creating an elegant shimmer that makes the room feel really special.

4. To Beautify Bar Carts & Shelves
It sounds almost too simple, but putting a beaded tassel on a shelf can instantly make it look more stylish. You could place tassels on the surface or hang some from the edge as simple decorative accents.
The same goes for bar carts. A tassel brings a fun, unexpected touch that makes it feel styled rather than just functional.

5. To Decorate Your Coffee Table Books
This one’s a little unconventional, but since I like using coffee table books and recipe books to create decorative vignettes, I love using tassels as bookmarks.
Laying a decorative tassel in an open coffee table book is a simple way to ensure the book looks like a deliberate piece of your living room decor, not just clutter.
While you can get regular bookmarks with tassels, I prefer using large fabric tassels. I find this gives the book, and my living room, a nice, classy look.

6. To Decorate Bannisters & Mantels
Here’s a slightly bolder way to use decorative tassels: string them together to make your own tassel garland and drape it over a stair rail or mantelpiece.
Personally, I prefer to save this idea for a special day, like a birthday, or seasonal decor, like Christmas, because it feels a bit too out there for my regular aesthetic. But if your home has more of a maximalist or funky style, this could be such a fun way to bring a little color to these areas!
7. To Hang from Hooks & Memo Boards
Decorative hooks are already brilliant as home decor accessories. They come in all sorts of styles and are perfect for filling empty wall space or adding character to awkward corners.
Why not hang a tassel from one? You could hang one tassel on its own as a tiny decorative accent, or combine it with something else, like a bag, a kitchen utensil, or a chopping board. So simple!
Memo boards are another fun spot to use decorative tassels. Just hang one from a push pin or a clip to turn a plain, functional board into a stylish statement. You could even match your tassels to your push pins for a coordinated look.

8. To Style Artwork & Mirrors
Here’s a sweet, subtle way to use decorative tassels: hang a small tassel from the corner of a framed piece of artwork, a family photo, or a mirror. This should be a small decorative accent that adds charm without overwhelming the piece.
A few tips: make sure your tassel isn’t so big that it covers the picture or reflection, and choose a soft fabric tassel so it won’t scratch the glass.

9. To Embellish Drawer Pulls
It’s not just door knobs that deserve a little tassel love… drawer pulls, cupboard handles, and cabinet knobs also deserve a bit of special treatment!
Hanging a decorative tassel from a drawer handle is an easy way to add visual interest to an otherwise plain surface. It makes an otherwise functional object feel stylish and intentional.
Just make sure your tassels aren’t too long, so they don’t get in the way when you open the drawers or doors. And choose soft fabric tassels so they don’t scratch or damage your furniture when they swing.

10. To Style Baskets & Bowls
Here’s another slightly unconventional idea: drape decorative tassels over the edges of baskets, bowls, and other containers around your home. This will instantly add a bit of flair to any container!
Alternatively, you could attach tassels to the handles, or in some cases, even use them as handles themselves. It’s a simple upgrade that will make even the most plain containers look that little bit more high-end.
Another fun trick: if you have a decorative bowl, jar, or container and aren’t sure what to fill it with, use a fancy tassel as a filler. This will add color, texture, and style without adding any additional clutter.
These small styling choices may seem minor, but they really elevate the aesthetic of your home and make ordinary objects feel thoughtfully designed.

11. To Drape Around Vases & Plant Pots
One of the easiest ways to decorate with tassels is to simply drape them around things you already have, like vases, plant pots, and jugs.
You could wrap a fabric tassel around the neck of a vase, tie a few colorful tassels around a plain terracotta pot, or hang one over the handle of a jug for a relaxed, boho look. Even larger pieces like urns, buckets, or an umbrella stand could be dressed up using large decorative tassels.
Have a wander through your house and see which containers could use a little touch of elegance.

12. To Make the Practical Pretty
One of my favorite things about decorative tassels is that you can add them to almost anything to make it more interesting and in line with your home decor. They’re especially handy for sprucing up items that aren’t naturally stylish.
Think cleaning caddies, broom handles, and other boring everyday objects. A simple colorful tassel can turn something utilitarian into a small decorative accent that actually looks good.

13. As A Pretty Window Treatment
Decorative tassels are the perfect finishing touch for any window treatment. There are so many ways you can use them!
One option is attaching tassels to your curtains themselves. If you have basic sewing skills, this should be fairly easy. If not, you could probably make it work with some clips or hooks. That could be a fun little weekend project!
Using decorative tassels as a curtain tieback is a very classy option, especially if you go for a chunky cord in a contrasting color.
Or, even easier… hang tassels directly from your curtain rod as pretty little decorative accents. Cute!

14. To Decorate Your Christmas Tree
Finally, why not use decorative tassels to decorate your Christmas tree? They could be a classy alternative or addition to traditional baubles and tinsel, especially since they come in such a huge range of styles!
I’d love to see how you style them on your Christmas tree, so if you try this, please let me know!
