If you’re lucky enough to have a craft room all to yourself, you’re living the dream! But let’s be real—craft room organization can be a massive pain in itself. Most of us don’t have huge spaces to work with, and if you’re anything like me, you’ve got a ton of craft supplies. Finding room for everything (and keeping it organized) can feel pretty overwhelming.
But here’s the thing: when your craft room is organized, everything just clicks. You can find what you need in a snap, switch between projects without a fuss, and best of all, your space feels and looks amazing.

So, how do you make the most of a small craft room? What’s the best way to keep all your art supplies in order? I’ve rounded up a bunch of super practical craft room organization ideas to help you out.
Start by decluttering—seriously, it makes a huge difference. Then, take the tips that work for you and your craft space. Let’s get started!
Large Storage Solutions
Let’s start with the biggest storage solutions, since they’ll take up the most space and so need to be used efficiently.
Workbench or Desk with Storage
If you’ve got a designated space for crafting in your craft room—like a desk or workbench—you’re already off to a great start. But why stop at just a surface to work on? Make that space work double duty by using it as a storage solution, too.
For example, the workbench in my craft room has cupboards and drawers underneath, which is perfect for stashing those bigger, heavier items that you don’t need out all the time—think printers, your sewing machine, or your Cricut.

But don’t settle for the default storage setup that comes with your desk. Get creative and maximize every inch of space above and below.
If the cupboards are deep, consider adding pull-out shelves so you can easily access everything without having to dig around. Inside the drawers, drawer organizers are your best friend! You could even use those underwear storage dividers for keeping yarn tidy and easy to grab.

Don’t forget about the wall space above your desk, either. Consider adding shelves like I did with my game storage unit. This space is perfect for keeping essential tools, tape, pens, and anything else you need within arm’s reach of your crafting space.
Cabinets, Cupboards & Storage Units
If you’ve got the space in your craft room, built-in cabinets and shelving units are a total game-changer for storage. They can help you really maximize every inch of your craft area.
You can go the pre-built route, like we did in my mom’s sewing room, or if you’re feeling handy, custom-build them to fit your exact needs—just like the wall-to-wall unit I built to store our board games.

When setting up your cabinets, think strategically about what goes where. Keep those items you don’t need as often, like seasonal decorations, on the highest shelves. And, just like with your desk storage, consider adding pull-outs in the deeper cupboards and drawers. This makes it so much easier to reach everything, no matter how deep it’s tucked away.
If your crafting involves textiles, you might want to include a wardrobe-style cupboard where you can hang up fabrics to keep them wrinkle-free and easy to browse through. And for the woodworkers out there, you can even hide away a wood corral behind a cupboard door to keep your materials neat and out of sight.
Vertical Storage Space Ideas
One of the best ways to maximize your craft space is by taking advantage of all that vertical real estate—think walls, the backs of closet doors, and even the ceiling. With a little creativity, you can free up valuable floor and desk space.
Here are some of my favorite storage solutions that make the most of vertical space.
Shelves
Shelves are a fantastic way to utilize vertical space in your craft room, whether it’s a full bookshelf or shelving unit, or just a single shelf.
For example, you could install a single shelf that runs around the top of your walls, which would be perfect for storing books, bins, or other items you don’t need to access every day.
I also love these chevron shelves I built to store my paint supplies!

Pegboards
Pegboards are a classic go-to for craft room storage, and for good reason! They’re especially handy when placed above your workspace, keeping everything you need right within arm’s reach.
Pegboards come in various sizes, and you can easily add more panels to create a larger storage area as your needs grow.

What makes pegboards so versatile are the endless accessories and attachments available now. You can use pen holders to display all your pen colors, baskets for storing yarn, hooks for hanging small tools, racks for thread spools, and even phone holders so you can watch tutorials or keep inspiration images in view.
The key is to work backwards from what you need most often and find a way to store it all on your pegboard, keeping your workspace tidy and efficient.
Rails
Installing a rail (or towel rod) in your craft room is another smart way to use vertical space. With a few S hooks, you can hang tools or buckets filled with pens, paintbrushes, or other supplies.
This setup lets you easily grab an entire pot of supplies when you need them, keeping your workspace clutter-free and making it simple to switch between projects.

Hooks & Pegs
Individual hooks, like those handy Command strip ones, or even whole coat racks, are excellent for keeping your surfaces clear and organized.
They’re not just for tools—hooks are perfect for hanging cleaning supplies and useful items like brooms, aprons, towels, or face masks. You can also use them to hold bags filled with craft supplies, like balls of yarn, fabric scraps, or stuffing.
For even more storage, consider adding adhesive hooks to the inside of cupboard or cabinet doors.

Fabric Hanging Wardrobe
A fabric hanging wardrobe is a great solution for storing lighter materials like yarn or fabric. You can also use one of those hanging pouch organizers for the backs of doors.
Pinboard or Memo Board
If you love collecting inspiring images, jotting down ideas, or even photocopying recipes, a pinboard or memo board is a must-have. It’s a great way to keep all those scraps of paper, notes, and clippings organized and in one place.

The Underside of Shelves
Don’t forget about the often-overlooked underside of your shelves! This space is perfect for adding extra storage in your craft room.
You can attach a magnetic strip to hold magnetic tins filled with small items like paper clips, needles, or pins.

Another clever idea is to fix jar lids to the underside of the shelf, so you can screw and unscrew jars containing small supplies.
Tool holder
If you have a lot of tools, a wall-mounted tool storage system can be a game-changer. There are plenty of options out there, from vertical, pegboard-style holders to shelves with holes for pens and other tools.
You can buy ready-made solutions or get creative and build your own to perfectly suit your needs. Some people even take it a step further by making tool holders that fold in and out of the wall. Neat!
Dispensers
There are so many things you can attach to the wall to make your crafting life easier, and dispensers are a perfect example.
You can install paper roll dispensers for easy access to wrapping or craft paper, tape dispensers, and even cereal dispensers for storing beads, buttons, or other small items. I feel like wall-mounted soap dispensers could be useful for something too!

Portable Storage Solutions
Portable storage is amazing, especially if you dabble in multiple crafts and need to move your supplies around. Here are some portable craft storage solutions.
Lazy Susan
A Lazy Susan is a brilliant way to keep a variety of items easily accessible, whether it’s in a cupboard or right on your desk. With just a quick spin, you can access whatever you need. There are also spinning organizers designed specifically for stationery, makeup, and other small items.
Clothing Rail on Wheels
A clothing rail on wheels is a versatile addition to any craft room, especially if you work with fabric. It’s perfect for hanging up fabrics to keep them wrinkle-free and easy to browse. You can also use it to hang paintings or other artwork as they dry, store craft mats, or keep large pieces of cardboard, foamboard, and similar materials organized.
Trolley
The classic craft companion! A rolling cart or storage trolley is an essential tool for any crafter, offering multiple levels of storage with plenty of room for organizing craft supplies. Many trolleys also come with attachments, so you can hang tools or materials from the sides.
Vanity Cases & Stackable Boxes
A vanity case, like those used by professional makeup artists, is a great portable storage option for crafters. When you open them up, everything is right there, ready to go, making it perfect for taking your projects outside the house.

Smaller Storage Containers
It’s not enough to just stuff your craft supplies into cupboards and onto shelves—you need to keep them organized by using smaller containers.
Personally, I’m a big fan of clear containers because they let you see exactly what’s inside at a glance. But if clear isn’t your style, labeling is another great option to ensure everything has its place.
Whenever possible, choose stackable containers to really make the most of your vertical space.
Here are some of my favorite craft room storage ideas for smaller items.

Storage Bins & Cube Organizers
Storage bins are perfect for those items you need to rummage through, like beads, fat quarters, or other small supplies. They’re easy to access, and their open design makes it simple to find what you’re looking for without having to unpack everything.

Baskets
Baskets are perfect for keeping related items together, like bottles of paint or glue. They’re easy to pick up, so you can quickly move them over to your workspace when you’re ready to start crafting. I think they are the ideal craft room organization solution for maintaining order while preserving style.
Caddies
Caddies are great for organizing a selection of smaller items like pens, pencils, rulers, erasers, and more. They keep everything neatly in one place and they’re super convenient to pick up and take to your workspace.

Cantilever Storage Boxes
Cantilever storage boxes, often used as toolboxes, are brilliant for keeping small craft items organized and easy to access.
While many of these boxes are the typical black, industrial-looking ones designed for DIY projects, don’t let that deter you—there are plenty of more stylish options available that fit right into your craft room aesthetic.
With multiple tiers that expand as you open them, these boxes allow you to neatly store and quickly find your supplies, all while keeping everything compact and portable.
Hardware Drawers
If you need to organize lots of small bits and pieces, like buttons, pins, or beads, a plastic hardware storage organizer is the perfect solution. With multiple small compartments, you can keep everything sorted and easy to find. This doesn’t just make for great craft room organization, it also works wonders in a garage workshop!

Tins, Jars, Pots, etc.
Tins, mason jars, and pots are perfect for housing smaller collections of objects like pencils and paintbrushes.
