13 Linen Closet Organization Ideas for An Easier Life!

Hands up if you’ve ever found yourself with more of a mountain of dishevelled towels and bedsheets than something you could call a linen closet! 🙋🏽‍♀️

Linen closet organization can feel like an impossible (and never-ending) task, especially when you live with other people (ahem, children!). But with a few simple linen closet organization hacks up your sleeve, you can transform your closet into a neat, accessible space that keeps your linens fresh, tidy, and easy to grab.

Let’s dive in! Here are my top tips for organizing a linen closet…

1. Declutter & Categorize

A well-organized linen closet contains only the linens you actually use. So the first step is to take everything out and see what you’ve got.

If you’ve got bath towels that have seen better days or mismatched pillowcases you never use, donate them, repurpose them, or throw them out. 

Once you’ve cleared out the clutter, it’s time to group similar items together. Here are a few ways to do that:

• Organize by type – Keep bath towels, hand towels, fitted sheets, and duvet covers in separate sections. 
• Group by room – Keep each room’s linens together, so duvet day is a breeze.
• Color-code linens – Assign different colors to family members or rooms, so you always know what goes where.

As you sort, consider how often each item is used. Store the linens you use on a regular basis at eye level so they’re easy to reach. Reserve the top shelf for extra sets of sheets, seasonal bedding, or beach towels, and use lower shelves for bulky items like duvets or blankets. 

2. Use Vertical Shelf Dividers

One of the biggest causes of messy linen closets is piles of towels and sheets that collapse every time you grab something. Instead of constantly refolding and restacking, why not create designated sections for bath towels, fitted sheets, pillowcases, etc?

There are lots of different kinds of vertical dividers you can buy to keep everything in place. Personally, I like the clear acrylic adjustable ones best because you can set them up to fit your linen collection perfectly. They’re also super easy to wipe clean!

Most linen closets aren’t all that big, so every inch of space counts. That’s why I like to use hooks in spaces like this—whether that’s on the back of the door or on the side walls.

You could hang small hand towels, wash cloths, or even baskets containing smaller items. To make sure your towels stay hanging up, sew small loops into the corners.

4. File Fold Your Towels

If you’re tired of your kids pulling a towel from the middle of pile and letting the whole stack collapse, try the file fold method. Instead of stacking towels on top of each other, fold them and stand them upright—just like files on a shelf. This makes it easy to see all your towels at a glance and grab one without disturbing the rest.

To keep them neatly in place, you could use magazine holders or tension rods installed vertically.

5. Roll Instead of Stuffing

Bulky items like duvets and bath towels can take up a lot of closet space, but rolling them instead of stuffing them onto a shelf makes a big difference. 

For an extra linen closet organization hack, try placing rolled towels inside a repurposed wine rack. I haven’t tried this myself but I feel like it could really help keep your linen closet super organized. 

6. Use The Pillowcase Method

One of my favorite linen closet organization tips is to use the pillowcase method—simply fold your sets of sheets neatly and tuck them inside one of the matching pillowcases. This keeps everything together, so you’re never left hunting for a missing fitted sheet or top sheet.

Not only does this method help maintain a well-organized linen closet, it also saves you time. Just grab a pillowcase bundle, and you have a full set of sheets ready to go!

7. Use Linen Storage Bags

For extra protection, consider using purpose-made linen storage bags. These organizers are designed to keep your sets of sheets and other bedding dust-free and neatly stored. They come in various sizes, often with clear panels, so you can easily see what’s inside.

8. Use Drawer Pulls

One of the most annoying things about organizing linens is how deep linen closet shelves are! Since you can’t easily reach the back of such deep shelves, so you don’t make use of that space, or you (or your kids!) end up shoving all sorts of things back there, creating a disorganized mess.

That’s why I love drawer pulls. They enable you to make use of the full space, without hiding your belongings from you or making you grope around for items lost at the back!

9. Add Lights to Illuminate Dark Corners

On a similar note, one of the easiest ways to improve your linen closet organization is by adding a little extra light. If your closet space is deep, install some stick-on LED lights, so you can see everything stored at the back of the closet. Simple but effective!

10. Use The Closet Door

The back of the cabinet door is the perfect place to store small items that you might need to grab quickly. Think washcloths, sanitary products, cleaning products, extra toiletries, and other miscellaneous household items.

11. Use Storage Baskets

Baskets are always a great storage solution, and they look so pretty!

When it comes to linen closet organization, baskets, bins, and clear containers are good for storing pillow cases, wash cloths, smaller hand towels, cleaning supplies, and other bits and pieces. They keep different items separate and even make your closet look good!

If you have a deep closet, opt for longer baskets to make use of that space. If you can, go for baskets with handles, so you can easily pull them out and grab what you need.

12. Add a Rolling Storage Cart

A cart or trolley on wheels is a great way to keep frequently used linens accessible, especially if your closet has no built-in shelving at the bottom (and you’re not interested in DIYing some!). You can put it at the bottom of your linen closet and roll it out when you need something from it.

13. Label Everything

One of the simplest but most effective ways to maintain a well-organized linen closet is by using labels. Of course, labeling your bins, baskets, or shelves makes it easier for everyone to find what they’re looking for, but that’s not the only benefit. Using a clear labeling system ensures that everyone in the household knows exactly where each type of linen belongs (so there are no excuses for putting things back in the wrong place!)
