If you’re staring at an outdated bathroom and dreaming of a modern, stylish space, you might feel like a full remodel is the only answer. But trust me, you don’t have to break the bank to make your bathroom look fresh and fabulous! I’m sharing bathroom updates that won’t break the bank.
I’ve been in your shoes, thinking I needed thousands of dollars to get a Pinterest-worthy bathroom, but I’ve found some truly amazing ways to make bathroom updates on a budget. In fact, I’ve done it a few times, and let me tell you—it’s genuinely incredible what a few affordable tweaks can do.

12 Bathroom Updates for Any Budget!
No matter your budget—even if it’s less than $100—you can absolutely breathe new life into your bathroom. Take my Jack & Jill bathroom—I gave it a whole new look for under $90!
But, if you do one DIY project every few months, and spread out the cost over a couple years, you can execute an entire remodel with smart money-saving moves.
Here’s how to update a bathroom on a budget:
1. Clean, Regrout, & Caulk
The very first thing you’ll want to do is use a little elbow grease to give your bathroom a good deep clean and declutter. Toss or donate anything you don’t use and, once everything is clean, take a look at your grout and caulk.

A dingy moldy or stained grout or caulk can make your bathroom look worse than it needs to be. If it can’t be bleached, it’s time to dig out the old caulk and re-caulk.
Simply refreshing your grout can make your bathroom look brand new. And the best part? It only takes a few hours and approx $15 to $30! All you need is a grout pen, which is pretty much like a marker for your grout lines.
You can just refresh the color you already have, and it’ll look instantly cleaner and brighter. If you want to switch things up, you could opt for a dark grout or even a bright, fun color that ties in with your bathroom’s accent theme.
2. Paint the Walls
A fresh coat of paint is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to transform your bathroom. It will instantly make everything feel cleaner and more modern!
For a bright and airy vibe, go for a light color, like the Behr Whisper White that I used in my Parisian-inspired powder room.

Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, why not go bold? A deep, dramatic color can give you a sophisticated, luxe feel without costing much at all. I found a beautiful deep blue Glidden paint for my powder room for just $12 in the discount section at Walmart. Bargain!
And hey, if painting your bathroom walls isn’t an option—maybe you’re in a rental or working with a super tight budget—don’t worry! The magic is in the details, and there are plenty of other ways to make your bathroom look amazing, so stay tuned!
3. Hang Statement Wallpaper Only On The Top Half of The Wall
Hanging statement wallpaper is a great way to add a touch of sophistication to your bathroom, but can be expensive. The trick to keeping it budget-friendly is not to cover the whole room—just a small section can make a big impact!
Select a paper with a repeating pattern that can be used on the top quarter of the wall, and paint the bottom unpapered part of the wall. Use chair rail as a divider and molding for an intentionally partial-wall panelling effect.

I went for a gold metallic peel-and-stick wallpaper in my girls’ bathroom, only on one wall to save a few bucks. It was such a cost-effective way to create the glamorous look they were after.
4. Give Your Vanity & Cabinets a Makeover
Got an outdated or just plain ugly vanity or cabinets? Don’t worry, you don’t need to replace them—just give them a little DIY love! A fresh coat of paint and some new hardware can completely transform an old, tired piece.

So, how do you do it? You might need to sand and prime your cabinets first, then paint them in your chosen color. Cabinet paint is more durable (and leaves less streaks) than traditional wall paint.
If you’re not picky about the exact hue of paint color, keep an eye out for discounted tins at the store, or check if your local thrift shop has any leftover paint from other people’s projects. If you’re switching out the handles, you may need to fill the old holes before adding the new ones. Finish it off with a few coats of polycrylic to seal and protect your work.
Another option is to pick up a cheap bathroom vanity or console table at a thrift store and give it a new lease on life with some paint and hardware. To protect the surface—especially if it’s wood—don’t forget to apply several coats of clear polyurethane to make it moisture-proof and durable.
5. Add Molding To Achieve A Luxe Look For Less
Simple 1-inch molding is fairly inexpensive (just avoid chair molding) and goes a long way.

It provides a truly upscale, classy architectural detail that will make your space feel way more expensive than it really is.

6. Upgrade Your Lighting
Lighting can completely transform a space, especially small rooms like bathrooms. If your current lights are plain or outdated, swapping them out for stylish new light fixtures can make a huge difference. Look for affordable lighting options at thrift stores or in the discount section of your local hardware store.
These days, there are online options that can be quite affordable! Search Amazon or Wayfair and compare prices.

And don’t forget about the smaller details, like your light pulls or switches. You can find chic, decorative light pulls that add a touch of personality, or switch out old, yellowed switches for sleek new ones. It’s those little details that make the space feel intentional.
7. Switch Out Old Hardware
One of the most effective ways to give your bathroom a cohesive look is by updating the hardware. Matching pieces like faucets, cupboard handles, toilet roll holders, and towel rails ties everything together but even just switching out ugly, old features for shiny new fixtures will instantly make your bathroom feel more modern.
These items don’t need to cost the earth. I found a gorgeous toilet paper holder for just $13 and a sleek towel holder on sale for $15.

If you have a shower, definitely consider replacing your shower head. Swapping out an old, tired shower head for a sleek new one will make your whole bathroom both look and feel more luxurious.
8. Add Decorative Tiling
Replacing your floor or wall tiles probably isn’t going to be an option, but peel-and-stick tiles are a great way to give them a brand new look. These faux tiles go right over the top of your existing ones and can make it look like you’ve had a proper remodel! No need to cover an entire floor or wall. Just add a statement area or create an accent wall.

9. Cover Bath Tub Siding
Instead of buying a whole new tub, give your bathtub a makeover. All you need to do is add new siding that works with your chosen aesthetic, over the top of the existing siding. This beginner-friendly DIY update can be done for under $50 and it’ll instantly take your bathroom from “meh” to “wow.”
All you need to do is get a piece of MDF or similar material cut to the right size, then paint it, add beading, or even apply faux stick-on tiles. Make it waterproof if possible, fix it into place, and add sealant around the edges. A super cheap way to create a beautiful focal point for your bathroom!
10. Upgrade Your Textiles & Soft Furnishings
This is one of the really fun bits—picking out new textiles and soft furnishings! Coordinated hand towels, washcloths, and bath mats can instantly pull the room together.

Another great option is to treat yourself to a new shower curtain that complements your chosen style. Shower curtains with lovely designs can be so expensive though, so consider making your own. I made my shower curtain for just $10!
While you’re at it, don’t forget the details. Pretty shower curtain rings or even a new curtain rod are tiny touches that make a big difference. I splurged on an acrylic rod for $20 and rings for $13, and while they aren’t essential, they added that extra touch of elegance.
11. Swap Out Just The Vanity Top
If replacing an old vanity isn’t in the budget, paint the bottom of your existing vanity, but swap out the vanity top for a new one.
Yes, you can purchase just the vanity top with an integrated sink! They come in standard vanity sizes.

12. Accessorize!
This is the step where everything really comes together! Even if you can’t afford any of the other upgrades mentioned in this blog post, you can still transform the most boring plain white bathroom into a beautiful, inviting space, just by adding some fun accessories and small pops of color!
And you really can keep the cost of your bathroom update down by hitting up thrift stores, flea markets, discount sections, or even asking friends and family if they have any charming items you can have.

I’d start with a bold, statement mirror to hang above the sink and then add some functional yet decorative touches like towel hooks.
To keep things tidy, hide any clutter in decorative storage options like baskets, bowls, or boxes. I scored two pretty bowls at Goodwill for just 50 cents each that I use to hold little bits and pieces.
Look for charming items like soap dispensers, toothbrush holders, and even a nicer toilet brush or trash can. I paid only $3.98 for the marble salt bowl that I use as a soap dish.
Group items like lotions, soap pumps, or candles on a decorative tray to create a pretty vignette.
Wall art is another affordable way to add style to your bathroom, and it doesn’t have to cost much at all. I spent just $10 on two frames from Joann Fabric Store, found some prints online, and paid 49 cents each to enlarge them at Staples.
Finally, don’t forget about plants! Whether real or fake, adding a few bits of greenery is the best way to make your bathroom feel fresh and luxurious.
