We often feel we have to replace outdated furniture and accessories in our home for it to look good and function at its best. But existing pieces and thrifted items can often get a whole new lease on life with just spray paint!
A thrifted red bookshelf, plus several mismatched accessories only needed a little love to look their best.

Here are a few easy tips to transform a bookshelf in a day!
1. Go Glam With Metallic
Add a touch of glam using Krylon Fusion All-In-One® Metallic, which comes in a variety of metallic colors.
Metallic Gold is a classic finish that I am using for my bookcase, but any of the gorgeous Krylon metallic finishes will add a little sparkle. We’re talking colors ranging from Metallic Rose Gold, to Metallic Oil Rubbed Bronze, to, Metallic Black Stainless and beyond!
SPRAY PAINTING TIP: No need to prime or prep, which means a quick transformative project! Simply do multiple light passes without getting too close to avoid drips.
The metallic look gives it a high-end styled finish that will look better than most new pieces bought online, which often looks cheap. I’ve frequently been disappointed with the finish on newly purchased piece of furniture, and had to pull out my Krylon spray paint to make it look like a quality piece!
2. Add Class With Marble Contact Paper
Marble contact paper will really take the shelves up a notch to give it that high-end look to match your high style finish. Look for marble contact paper with an adhesive backing, and a realistic marbling effect.
3. Zhush Up The Accessories
No need to spend a ton of money on all new decorative accessories!
Existing or thrifted items can get a whole new look by using Krylon Fusion All-In-One spray paint. It can be used on a variety of surfaces, including wood, metal, wicker, plastic, glass, and several other surfaces.
SPRAY PAINT DESIGN TIP: Layer various spray paint finishes for a unique look.
To get this effect, I started with Peacock Blue and let it dry. Next I added a light layer of Black, and allowed it to dry completely. Finally I ended by using Krylon Glitter Blast, which gave it a touch of glam. Now this old wooden box that previously had painted babies on it, has a new glamorous modern top!
4. Style It Right
Here are a few tricks to style your bookcase so it makes an impact.
Vary Heights: Each shelf should have an item with a bit of height to it, whether that is a piece of artwork, a stack of books, or a vase that takes up at least 3/4 of the height of the shelf. Then mix in a few smaller items to fil in the foreground. Stagger the height of each item for best effect.
Repeat Color & Texture: Repeat colors and textures across various shelves. If I add a black basket on the top shelf, I will add something with a bit of black on a couple other shelves also. It weaves the color themes throughout the shelf for a cohesive look.
Just when I thought there was no hope for some of these ugly pieces, all they needed was a little glow-up to make them incredible!
A previously bare corner in my home finally looks complete, and only at the cost of spray paint!
In a single day, we’ve transformed an ugly red bookcase into a sophisticated one, perfect for design and storage.
